CoaL Chapter 4
Chapter 4 Things get complicated
(A/N: Ah! Another chapter so soon! [Which is a first for me.] In any case, I just wanted to warn you that instead of calling Nick a male witch, I'm going to now be referring to him as a 'Warlock.' A friend of mine said she'd heard it around before, so I decided to adopt it. Allonsy!)
Sometime later, Nick was vaguely aware that they'd moved off of the rooftop and away from the sight of destruction. It was still quiet, though, so he could assume that they were still in the area of whatever had attacked. The next thing Nick saw was the pile of (tempting) canned peaches. He pushed back the urge to jump the pile and struggled to sit up, a gasp forcing him to sit back.
Of course, his gasp was loud enough, apparently, to bring the capped hunter back inside, donning a worried expression. "Ya'll alright Nick?" He asked, shuffling slightly as he watched the warlock. "My side hurts like a son of a bitch but otherwise I'm fine." He grumbled, snatching up a c
Portals, Cake, and LemonsIt was all about timing, which was hard to do when your being thrown through the air at near amazing speeds. Ayano wasn't sure how she did it the first go around, but she did, she though, as she sat back and reflected on her life up till then. Her childhood was unremarkable, having lived in an orphanage until she was adopted by some people who worked at Aperture. They saw the ability to adapt in her, as quick a learner as she was. They moved her into a motel-like room, teaching her at the same time that they tested her.
Then GLaDOS happened. Well, Caroline and GLaDOS happened. The people at Aperture were forced to transfer Caroline into the GLaDOS project early, due to Cave Johnson dying from moon dust poisoning. There were mishaps along the way. GLaDOS still held Caroline's resentment for Aperture, seeing as they practically killed her. Ayano was amused by it all. At those times that GLaDOS tried to take revenge, Ayano was usually in a test chamber, and thusly given some freedom. The
Take to the Sky
(A/N: Yes, its the Legend of the Guardians song that inspired me, so sue me. (jk) I just recently watched it and have been addicted to the theme song, mainly cause ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted to fly as the birds do. (not in an airplane but with actual wings.) I dunno where this wish/dream came from, but its been there for ages. I figured, wth, might as well write something. Allonsy!)
It started off softly, a quiet rushing sound in her ears that she couldn't quite place but that, as if naturally, made her think of the word home. Not the place she considered home at the time, but a home that she truly belonged to. She couldn't remember where her home was, but she realized she didn't need to know right this second. She just enjoyed the moment for what it was worth. The rushing sound made her think of gentle breezes on just right days, one of those days where you would just lay back and relax and do nothing but lay there.
As she contemplated that she realized ther
A Turning Point in the Clockwork WarA war of attrition
depends on supply and drawdown,
how much you have and how much you use up.
With personnel, the balance concerns
the influx of recruitment versus
the outflow of casualties, deserters, invalids.
There is only so much loss
that a fighting force can sustain
and still fight.
Pilot Claude Archer was the first
to challenge his invalid discharge.
"I don't need legs to fly," he said,
patting the healed stumps of his thighs.
"My Osprey runs on elbow grease."
The members of the discharge board
paused and looked at each other.
What he said was true.
The Osprey-class fighter jets
relied on hand controls,
and a sharp eye and iron nerve.
Fingers flicked through the stack
of discharge papers -- so many, many pages.
So many soldiers lost, never to fight again.
They could not afford to let slip even one
who might be retained, somehow,
to face the front line once more.
Far less could the war effort spare
one of its best pilots.
So they put Pilot Archer back on the roster,
Keep in Touch!
